Crew A: Get ready to take down the communication system.
I'm getting ready to run the periodic calibration of the subspace trans-stator array.
Remember, the 100% frequency scan takes six hours.Crew B: But I thought the update to the com-system calibration procedure not only requires a bracketed duty cycle burn-in.
With the system still online and functional.
It's more efficient and faster.
Only takes two hours.Crew A: No, the old way to run the cal works great.
No reason to change to some untried new method.
I'll just run the 100% frequency scan just like we always do.
It'll be fine.Crew B: Uh, okay. I guess you're right.
Spock: Excuse me, gentlemen. I couldn't help overhearing.
Crew A: Yes, sir?
Spock: The argument you are employing, Mr. Austin, is not logical.
In fact, it exhibits the fallacy of argumentum ad antiquitatem.
Also known as appeal to tradition.Crew B: The argument seems to make sense.
Spock: That may be so, but the form of the argument is invalid.
Just because something has always been done a certain way, does not mean that that way is or will always be the right way.
A method is not a good method just because it is an old method.
Similarly, a method is not a better method just because it is a new method.
Rather, a method is good only because it is sufficiently effective for the task.
Over time, outdated methodologies must give way to improved techniques.
Otherwise, there could be no progress.Crew B: Thank you, Mr. Spock.
Crew A: Yes, I should rethink what I'm trying to say.
Spock: That would be best.
If an argument seems to make sense, it cannot be valid unless the form is valid.
And that it does not exhibit one of the logical fallacies, such as argumentum ad antiquitum, the appeal to tradition.
It's only logical.
