【Star Trek邏輯思考】史波克先生的邏輯課程 #17 - Fallacy of the Inverse (Denying the Antecedent)

Crew A: The captain said the tensions are so high that if we discover that the Federation colony on Depaulo 3 was destroyed by the Klingons, there will be war between the Federation and the Empire.
Crew B: I know, that was a daunting possibility, but the survey landing party just returned. They're pretty sure the colony was actually wiped out by a collision with a passing comet.
Crew A: Well, that's great news. Now we won't be going to war with the Klingons.
Crew B: What? How can you say that?
Crew A: Well, the captain said that if the colony on Depaulo 3 was attacked by the Klingons, there'd be war for sure. But they didn't attack the colony, so no war.
Crew B: Okay, yeah. It's too bad about the colony, but at least we know there won't be war.
Crew A: Yeah, I was getting worried.
Spock: Excuse me, crewman, I couldn't help overhearing.
Crew A: Yes, sir?
Spock: The argument you are employing, Mr. Walking Bear, is not logical. In fact, it exhibits the fallacy of the inverse, also known as denying the antecedent.
Crew B: The argument seems to make sense.
Spock: That may seem so, Lieutenant, but the form of the argument is invalid. Denying the antecedent is a formal fallacy of inferring the inverse from the original statement.
It is committed by reasoning in the form, "If P, then Q. Therefore, if not P, then not Q."
The invalidity of arguments with this form is most readily demonstrated by forming a counterexample with true premises, but an obviously false conclusion, such as, "If you are traveling at warp speed, then you are aboard a starship. You are not traveling at warp speed, therefore you are not aboard a starship."
Consequently, just because the Klingons weren't responsible for destroying the T'Pollah 3 colony does not mean that the current tensions won't still ultimately lead to war for some other reason.Crew B: Thank you, Mr. Spock.
Crew A: Of course. I should rethink what I'm trying to say.
Spock: That would be best.
Even if an argument seems to make sense, it cannot be valid unless the form is valid, and that it does not exhibit one of the logical fallacies, such as denying the antecedent or the inverse fallacy.
It's only logical.
