Kirk:Alright, you all have your orders.

Sulu:Bridge to Captain Kirk. The Enterprise has arrived at Hermes II.

Kirk:Acknowledgement, J'Sulu. Assume standard orbit. I'm on my way.
Let's go, Scotty.

Scotty:Aye.

Crew A:So what do you think happened to the colonists that went missing after the attack by that Andorian marauder?
Three of the missing colonists were children. I hope they're okay.

Crew B:They're probably hiding somewhere safe and sound. It would be horrible if they were killed. They must be safe.

Crew A:Maybe the reason they haven't been found yet is because they're buried under the rubble.

Crew B:That couldn't be. Imagine those poor kids dead. They have to be safe and just waiting for our search party to find them.

Crew A:I guess you're right. I hope the rescuers find them soon.

Crew B:Me too.

Spock:Excuse me, ladies. I couldn't help overhearing.

Crew B:Yes, Mr. Spock?

Spock:The argument you are employing, nurse, is not logical. In fact, it is an appeal to emotion. A logical fallacy.

Crew A:I thought she was making pretty good sense.

Spock:That may seem so, Yeoman, but her argument is invalid.
An appeal to emotion is a type of argument which attempts to arouse the emotions of its audience in order to gain acceptance of its conclusion.
Emotion is not always out of place in logical thinking.
However, because strong emotions can subvert rational thought, playing upon emotions in an argument is often fallacious.
Appeals to emotion are always fallacious when intended to influence our beliefs.
Nurse Chapel, you employ this fallacy when you stated the missing colonists, particularly the children, must be alive because the thought of them dead was horrible.
In doing so, you were appealing to Yeoman Ran's desire for a positive outcome.
The fact that we desire something to be true gives not the slightest reason to believe it.
Just as the fact that we fear something being true is no reason to think it false.

Crew A:Thank you, Mr. Spock.

Crew B:Oh, I should reassess my thinking.

Spock:That would be best. But I too hope they are all safe.
Even if an argument seems to make sense, it cannot be valid unless the form is valid and...
...that it does not exhibit one of the logical fallacies such as an appeal to emotion. It's only logical.
