The state of flow / Zen |
"The state of flow" is a state of mental focus. As described by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, it refers to a state of complete immersion and focus on an activity. When in this state, individuals experience profound enjoyment, creativity, and productivity. They are completely focused on the present moment, forgetting about time and self-awareness.
The state of flow emphasizes the importance of being fully absorbed in the present moment. It requires individuals to focus entirely on their activities and encourages them to cultivate mindfulness and enhance awareness. This state can be experienced through dynamic activities, such as work, exercise, or hobbies, as well as through static activities, such as thinking, writing, or reciting. It can be triggered unconsciously during spontaneous moments of joy or cultivated through conscious practice.
When the popular meditation practices require a quiet and comfortable environment, Buddhist Zen meditation is less concerned with external conditions, it can even be practiced while using the restroom, taking a shower, or lying in bed before sleeping. It is particularly well-suited as a guide and method for cultivating the state of flow, as it emphasizes only the cultivation of mindfulness, focus and awareness.
Even with no practice of any meditation, it is possible to unconsciously enter the state of flow. Before I was introduced to Buddhism, I had two identical experiences: I began my duty with complete absorption after my breakfast, and completely losing track of lunch, metabolism and the duty off hour… I had been pulled out of my work when my boss reminded me to leave, and suddenly felt the pangs of hunger and thirst (having forgotten to eat lunch). These experiences have been discussed with other Buddhist practitioners, and they agree that I was in the state of Zen meditation (that is, the state of flow).
Despite their similarities, the states of flow and Zen differ in:
Flow requires a specific task or goal (e.g., winning a game, finishing a task); Zen, on the other hand, doesn't set a specific goal, but simply involves observing the experience of the present moment.
The trigger for flow has a psychological formula: the "challenge difficulty" of the task must reach a critical point where it highly matches the individual's "skill level." However, Zen requires no external skills or specific difficulty. Whether a highly accomplished monk or a beginner, one can settle the mind from within simply through breath or chanting.
Flow relies on "immediate external feedback" (e.g., a painter seeing the position of lines, a chef tasting flavor) that allows for continuous correction during action ; in contrast, meditation relies entirely on "internal feedback and awareness", when the mind wanders, the practitioner gently brings attention back through inner alertness.
In short: the state of flow is the ultimate release of this focus in a "specific activity," while Zen meditation is the "deliberate training" of the brain's focus.
