Crew A: Any luck finding who made off with the Grignard 7 artifact from the chem lab?

Sulu: Oh yes, it was Ensign Stevens. He's in the agony booth right now.

Crew A: He was caught with the item?

Sulu: Not exactly. The stolen artifact was found in the corridor on deck 5 by the crew quarters.
Obviously dropped by him in his haste to get away from my security forces.
It must be Stevens. What's more likely?
That the thief's cabin was on deck 5, or that his cabin was on deck 5 and he was part of the staff of the chem lab?

Crew A: That he worked in the chem lab and lived on deck 5, of course.

Sulu: Stevens is a chemist. A lot of the chem staff have cabins on deck 5, including Stevens. It's got to be him.

Crew A: I guess so.

Spock: I, of course, overheard your remarks.

Sulu: Yes, sir.

Crew A: Sir!

Spock: The argument you are employing, Security Chief, is not logical. In fact, it exhibits the conjunction fallacy.

Crew A: I thought Security Chief Sulu was very persuasive.

Spock: That may be so, Navigator Chekov. But the form of the argument is invalid.
This fallacy occurs when it is assumed that specific conditions are more probable than a single, general one.

Sulu: But sir, I only...

Spock: If I may continue...
The probability of the thief living on deck 5 and being a chemist is clearly less than the probability that he just lives on deck 5.
Because the set of chemists living on deck 5 is obviously a subset of all the inhabitants of deck 5.
What occurs with the conjunction fallacy is that in the presence of uncertainty,
when attempting to determine the probability of an option,
persons substitute what is more plausible with what is more probable, since it fits the story better.
This is the error you two were making, due to deck 5 having so many chemist cabins on it.

Crew A: Thank you, Commander Spock.

Sulu: Yes. I will use better judgment in the future.

Spock: That would be advisable. And you may wish to release Stevens from the agony booth until his guilt is better established.

Sulu: Right away, sir.

Spock: Even if an argument seems to make sense, it cannot be valid unless the form is valid and that it does not exhibit one of the logical fallacies,
such as the conjunction fallacy. It's only logical.
Return to your duties.
