The Challenges of Getting Started with Buddhism |

The challenges that beginners in Buddhism are very likely to encounter! |

Beginners in Buddhism often have this experience: when reading scriptures or listening to Dharma talks in an environment free from trials, they often feel "Ah, I see!" or "I understand." This "understanding" is merely a conceptual recognition. When faced with real-life situations, such as the distribution of benefits, conflicts, or emotional outbursts, deeply ingrained "habitual tendencies" and "self-clinging" immediately surface.

Conceptual understanding is the first step, but without putting it into practice and repeated application in daily life, it lacks power. Just like watching a workout tutorial and understanding the purpose of each exercise, doesn’t mean muscle is built, because understanding is no substitute for practice.

Let’s take a brief look at the challenges modern people face in their study and practice of Buddhism (especially Mahayana Buddhism)!

** Disordered Sequence (Disorder in the Order of Study)

Mahayana Buddhism contains a vast number of sutras and treatises (such as the Lotus Sutra, the Avatamsaka Sutra, and the Prajñāpāramitā sutras), with an immense number of technical terms. Without clear guidance on the sequence of study, beginners often find that the teachings in these sutras and treatises differ from one another—or even contradict each other—making it difficult to integrate and fully comprehend them. Furthermore, many people, having not yet established a foundation in the virtuous practices for human and celestial realms or the basic mind of renunciation (the foundation of Hinayana Buddhism), jump directly to the advanced Mahayana view of emptiness or the preliminary practices of Vajrayana. Often, due to this “disordered sequence,” their minds become confused by complex rituals or profound doctrines. Disordered Sequence is akin to attempting Calculus without first learning Algebraic Formulas.

**The Gap Between "Understanding" and "Practice

"Understanding" refers to theories and knowledge, specifically doctrinal comprehension. "Practice" refers to actual application. Spiritual practice is the process of correcting one's understanding to lead to correct words and actions. If one's understanding is not solid, spiritual practice easily becomes superficial or blind, leading to frustration.

** The Meaning of the Scriptures

The Chinese versions of Mahayana Buddhist scriptures we read today were all translated by eminent monks such as Xuanzang and Kumarajiva from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Tang Dynasty, and have been in circulation for nearly two thousand years. Their grammatical structures and rhetorical techniques present a vast gap compared to modern readers’ habits of reading vernacular Chinese. Furthermore, many important concepts are conveyed through “phonetic translation” (merely transcribing the Sanskrit pronunciation) or “dynamic translation” (borrowing terminology from indigenous Chinese schools of thought such as Confucianism and Daoism). This can easily lead to fundamental misunderstandings of their underlying meanings.

** Pace of Lifestyle

Without better living conditions, modern people don't have enough time to observe and adjust to their own circumstances, such as health, social life, and further education, let alone study religious philosophy and spiritual practice.

After having a basic understanding of the challenges we may encounter in studying Buddhism, let's briefly discuss how to master the learning methods:

>> Step by Step

The Extensive Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment provides an excellent explanation of the order of study and practice. It begins with the view of cause and effect and ethical principles of the Human and Heavenly Vehicles, then cultivates a mind of renunciation toward defilements, and finally leads to the fulfillment of the Mahayana Bodhisattva Path.

>> Seeking Guidance

Do not attempt to study the original scriptures directly from the outset. A good idea is to study the lecture transcripts or writings of contemporary Buddhist masters (such as my teacher, Venerable Master Hsing Yun) to understand the core teachings, and to build a solid foundation in Buddhist terminology under the guidance of experienced Buddhist practitioners (a monk, or a layman).

>> Cultivating the Mind Through Daily Experiences

Gradually break down and apply the Mahayana concepts of “compassion and wisdom” into daily small actions: practice of “patience” when faced with difficulties at work, and practice of “shifting perspective” during family arguments or other conflicts. The strengthening of the "muscles of wisdom" occurs when a source of distress happens. This is the practice of Mahayana Buddhism.

>> Establish simple "morning and evening chanting practices"

In today's world where work and socializing lead to fragmented time, we cannot spend several hours every day on rituals or meditating, but we may arrange five to ten minutes of "morning and evening chanting practices" by referring to my previous article <<The rituals of Mahayana Buddhism>>, this help to reserve a mental oasis for ourselves in the fast pace of life.

Although the sequence of Mahayana Buddhist practice may seem lofty, as long as we persevere in getting up after each setback and view it as an opportunity for correction, we can harmonize our understanding and practice. When both understanding and practice are on track, subsequent practice will be more solid.
