The lesson of leaving, ohana (family) and self

Leaving: When the sisters were forced to be separated due to unbearable circumstances such as the huge financial burden, it was hard for the older sister Nani to break the separation news to Lilo. However, the six-year-old Lilo went next to sad Nani's side and comforted her. I thought that it is heartwarming to see Lilo becoming stronger and comforted Nani even though she is so young. Sometimes the carefree kids play a significant role in facing the lesson of separation and may even comfort the adults in return.

Ohana (family): "No one should be left behind." For one thing, even though Stitch was one of reason for the sister's separation, Lilo said "You aren't bad. You just do bad things sometimes." Lilo was still willing to adopt Stitch after all the chaos it caused. For another thing, Stitch sank into the deep ocean in the end because of its special density in water. Lilo was not strong enough to save Stitch out of the water. When Nani did not want to save Stitch, Lilo reminded Nani the genuine meaning of Ohana- family. "No one should be left behind." As reluctant as Nani were, Nani changed her mind and rescued Stitch out of the vast ocean with all her might.

Self: One of the subtle spots that touched me is the hardship of Nani. Although she is super talented in surfing and marine biology, she chose to give up her dream in order to earn a living by herself so that she could live with Lilo. In the middle of the movie, Nani was rejected by all the jobs she tried. Fortunately, the sisters came across with the surfing coach poster and Nani's face was smiling from ear to ear. "Why not do something you love?"

I feel for the heavy amount of stress Nani was facing, but I feel more glad for Nani to strike a balance between making a living and doing something she loves. It was never too late to pursue your dream, even better when you can raise your family with your strength!

The ending (spoiler alert): The separation of Nani to another country to studying a degree versus Lilo still living in Hawaii with Stitch was simply solved by the teleport machine. The sisters were able to sleep together just like magic. However, it is hard for kids in real life to deal with their separation in life- family, friends, classmates, teachers. I understand it is only a cartoon, but how can kids tackle with the complicated emotions when they face separation?

Maybe kids have to adopt pets- just like Lilo adopted Stitch. Humans need companion.

END!
