Crew A: Have you heard that the landing tractor beam in the shuttlecraft hangar deck is malfunctioning again?

Crew B: No, I hadn't. It takes quite a while to repair it each time.

Crew A: Yes. I wish we would stop landing the heavy shuttles on patrol first, before the scout ships.

Crew B: Why?

Crew A: Because every time we land the heavy shuttles before the scout ships, the landing tractor beam soon breaks down?

Crew B: Hmm. I don't know.

Spock: Excuse me, gentlemen. I couldn't help overhearing.

Crew A: Yes, sir?

Spock: The argument you are employing, Mr. Kyle, is not logical.
In fact, it exhibits the fallacy of "Kumhock ergo Proctorhawk."
In other words, "false cause," or "correlation is not causality."

Crew B: The argument seems to make sense.

Spock: That may be so, but the form of the argument is invalid.
An argument committing this fallacy attempts to establish a causal connection between one event and another event that just happens to occur before it.
Just because one event follows another on a number of occasions, does not mean that the first event caused the second.
Your argument commits this fallacy and is therefore not valid.

Crew B: Thank you, Commander Spock.

Crew A: Yes, I shall rethink what I'm trying to say.

Spock: That would be best.
Even if an argument seems to make sense, it cannot be valid unless the form is valid,
and that it does not exhibit one of the logical fallacies such as "Kumhock ergo Proctorhawk," or "false cause."
It's only logical.
