The Death of Khamenei and the Mystery of Purim
The Death of Khamenei and the Mystery of Purim
1. Moses led God's people out of Egypt, and the Amalekites came to Rephidim and fought against the Israelites.
Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” (Exodus 17:8-9, ESV)
2. The Lord has sworn to fight the Amalekites for generations to come.
And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, saying, “A hand upon the throne of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” (Exodus 17:13-16, ESV)
3. The second war: God commands Saul to kill the Amalekites.
And Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”(1 Samuel 15:1-3, ESV)
4. Saul strikes down the Amalekites and captures King Agag of Amalek alive
And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction. (1 Samuel 15:7-9, ESV)
5. In the time of Esther, Haman, a descendant of Agag the Amalekites, sought to exterminate all the Jews.
After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, and advanced him and set his throne above all the officials who were with him. And all the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage. (Esther 3:1-2, ESV)
And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage to him, Haman was filled with fury. But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus. (Esther 3:5-6, ESV)
6. Esther, along with the Jews, fasted for three days and three nights without food or drink.
Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”Mordecai then went away and did everything as Esther had ordered him. (Esther 4:15-17, ESV)
7. The Jews designated the 14th and 15th of Adar as Purim.
And Mordecai recorded these things and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, obliging them to keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor. (Esther 9:20-22, ESV)
For Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur (that is, cast lots), to crush and to destroy them. But when it came before the king, he gave orders in writing that his evil plan that he had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. Therefore they called these days Purim, after the term Pur. Therefore, because of all that was written in this letter, and of what they had faced in this matter, and of what had happened to them, (Esther 9:24-26, ESV)
8. The Spiritual Meaning of the War in Iran Today: A Continuation of the Struggle Between God's People and the Amalekites
Haman is an evil leader in the Purim story; just as Khamenei is an evil leader in Iran. This war launched by Israel and the United States against Iran is a continuation of the struggle between God's people and Satan. February 28th this year is the eve of Purim Day, the day Khamenei was killed. This is just as the Scripture says: "The Lord has sworn to wage war against the Amalekites from generation to generation."
(Pur Day in 2026 falls on March 2nd and 3rd)
9. February 28th is the Sabbath, also the Shabbat Zachor
February 28th is the Sabbath, also the Shabbat Zachor. On this day, synagogues around the world read a passage of scripture: And Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’(1 Samuel 15:1-3, ESV).
