The Prayer of the Battle at Gethsemane

1. The Lord Leads His Disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” (Matthew 26:36, ESV) After the Last Supper, the Lord took his disciples with him to the Garden of Gethsemane and said, "Sit here while I pray." He then took Peter, James, and John with him. Jesus took the initiative, personally praying, opening the way to victory on Calvary; the three who went with Him could not reach it and all fell asleep.

2. The Lord's Solitary Struggle and Prayer

So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. (Matthew 26:44-45, ESV) The Lord prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." He prayed this three times, his sweat like drops of blood falling to the ground. After he finished praying, he said to the three men, “Let us go; my betrayer is near.”

3. The Lord's prayer defeated the devil, and He was willing to be crucified to fulfill the covenant of blood, water, and the Holy Spirit.

But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled. Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. (Matthew 26:56-57, ESV) The Lord Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane was victorious; He willingly sacrificed Himself on the cross to fulfill the covenant of marriage, and went with His men who had arrested Him.
