Post-liberals love to use polysemy & other forms of sophistry to confound their viewers into thinking certain terms or concepts are the same.

I often see the conflation of “collectivism” with the idea of “community” or the concept of common good, cooperation, shared values or interests. This is intentional, of course. Attempting to convince people that the only way a society can function effectively or responsibly is by becoming collectivist.

Classical Liberalism fosters community by encouraging voluntary participation in community life, impressing the importance of civic virtue, duty, cooperation from the bottom— from the citizens themselves & their institutions of culture. It is a shared commitment from the community— voluntarily & organically. It is not a top-down imposition, or an effort that necessitates negating the individual & replacing it with a collectivist identity.

It is freedom & duty.

You have a right to bear arms & be free of unreasonable search & seizure, but if you unlawfully carry a firearm & commit a crime, the police have the right to search you & confiscate your weapon. You will then be afforded your time in court, with representation. This is an example of how Classical Liberalism views the individual & agency, while acknowledging man’s occasional tendency towards actions that are harmful to society. It treats all as individuals with capacity for both good & bad. It recognizes human nature & experience, it doesn’t deny it.

Postmodernism views polysemy and equivocation or really any rhetorical tactics and spell casting as legitimate, and any rejection of using these tactics as illegitimate.

Postmodernism’s understanding of what constitutes “good faith” and legitimacy are completely different than people who are bound by Realism.
