Firstfruits Feast (commonly known as Easter)

I. Introduction

“Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, and he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. (Leviticus 23:10-11, ESV)

The day God ordained for offering the firstfruits was the day after the Sabbath, the first day of the week, the day of the Lord's resurrection. On that day, the sheaf of the firstfruits was brought to the priest and waved before the Lord's sanctuary. Offering the firstfruits to God is offering the best to Him and honoring Him.

Honor the Lord with your wealth

    and with the firstfruits of all your produce;

then your barns will be filled with plenty,

    and your vats will be bursting with wine. (Proverbs 3:9-10, ESV)

The Jews observed Firstfruits on time because God wanted them to recognize that Christ is the firstfruits. That day was the first day of the week, the day of the Lord's resurrection; this festival was established in the Law of Moses about 1,500 years ago, and Christ would certainly rise again at the Feast of Firstfruits!

Paul discovered this mystery! He said, "But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep." (1 Corinthians 15:20, ESV)
