III. The Jewish Passover in the Time of Jesus (Yeshua)
1. Jesus (Yeshua) Enters Jerusalem on a Donkey on the Tenth of the First Month
And you shall offer the Passover sacrifice to the Lord your God, from the flock or the herd, at the place that the Lord will choose, to make his name dwell there. (Deuteronomy 16:2, ESV)
Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, (Exodus 12:3, 5, ESV) In the Jewish custom of Jesus (Yeshua)' time, on the tenth of the first month, ten to twenty people would offer a lamb, which would be carefully examined in the Temple to ensure it was without blemish. On this day, Jesus (Yeshua) rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, and was rigorously examined by the Pharisees, who found no fault to accuse him of. Therefore, Jesus (Yeshua)' Passover lamb was perfect, without blemish or wrinkle. When Jesus (Yeshua) entered the city, the crowds shouted with joy and praise, welcoming Him with palm branches and exclaiming, “Hosanna! Blessed is the king of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord!” As it is written: So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus (Yeshua) found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming, (John 12:13-15, ESV)
2. The Slaughter of the Lamb on the Fourteenth Day
In the time of Jesus (Yeshua) (the Second Temple period), the Passover lamb was slaughtered and sacrificed in the Temple in Jerusalem. At that time, all Israel, following Moses' words, celebrated Passover annually, bringing a lamb without blemish to the Temple, where the priests sprinkled its blood on the altar, and the fat was burned on the altar.
The Jews believed that slaughtering the lamb in the Temple on the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month was in accordance with the law. At nine o'clock in the morning on the fourteenth (when the Lord was nailed to the cross), the priests sharpened their knives to prepare to slaughter a suitable lamb. At dusk, around three o'clock in the afternoon (when the Lord breathed his last on the cross), the priests slaughtered the lamb, sprinkled its blood on the altar, skinned it, and offered its fat.
Finally, after the sacrifice in the temple, each family took the lamb home, roasted it over a fire, and shared it at the Passover feast.
3. The Lord Jesus (Yeshua) is the Passover Lamb, who sacrificed himself to accomplish the salvation of blood, water, and the Holy Spirit.
Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. (1 Corinthians 5:7, ESV) The ram lamb that the Israelites ate each evening during Passover was merely a prefiguration of the slain lamb, Christ. The Lord Jesus (Yeshua) is the true Passover Lamb, who sacrificed himself to atone for the sins of all humanity, accomplishing the complete salvation of blood, water, and the Holy Spirit on the cross.
The timing of Jesus (Yeshua)' sacrifice—crucified at 9 a.m. and dying on the cross at 3 p.m.—perfectly matches the time of the Passover lamb's slaughter. At 9 a.m., the priests sharpened their knives in preparation for killing a suitable lamb; at 3 p.m., the lamb was slaughtered (the moment of Jesus (Yeshua)' death).
