Last weekend was Father’s Day, and I thought it would be a great idea for the whole family to go for a nature walk not too far from the city. I wanted us to enjoy the fresh outdoor air, escape the noise and pollution of the city, and just be embraced by nature. To my dismay, the moment we stepped out into the parking lot, we were hit with the smell of marijuana. It completely ruined the mood. Ever since New York legalized recreational marijuana in 2021, it feels like we’ve lost the right to breathe fresh air altogether! Sad, but true!

I love New York—it’s my second home—but the smell of marijuana is suffocating! I actually prefer the old smoking culture, where office buildings or rooftops had designated ashtrays so smokers could gather in one specific area. This not only kept the environment clean from littered cigarette butts, but also prevented them from bothering or compromising the health and well-being of others. Nature and the air belong to everyone. We shouldn't let smokers or marijuana users run wild and strip away other people’s right to breathe fresh air! I believe the government needs to change its policies and strictly crack down on this inappropriate behavior!
