In Buddhist teachings, wealth is never truly ours alone. The Buddha reminded his followers that material possessions are fragile, subject to forces beyond our control. This idea is expressed in the doctrine of “Shared by Five Families”—a vivid metaphor that illustrates how worldly riches can be claimed by five inevitable “owners".

These five inevitable “owners" are Water (flood), Fire, Government, Thieves, and (Unworthy) Heirs.

Fire and Water represent various forms of natural disasters caused by force majeure. These disasters can lead to the complete loss of investment projects and assets, or even result in losses.

Government – Taxes, confiscation, or political upheaval that can strip away assets.

Thieves – Robbery, fraud, or exploitation can take what we thought was secure.

(Unworthy) heirs – Descendants may squander resources through wastefulness or

indulgence.

These five “families” symbolize the impermanence of material wealth and remind us that ownership is never absolute.

The Buddha’s Message do not meant to instill fear, but to awaken wisdom.

Attachment breeds anxiety: Clinging to possessions only deepens suffering when they inevitably change hands.

Generosity transforms wealth: By practicing charity, supporting the community, and offering to the Three Jewels, wealth becomes a source of merit rather than worry.

Impermanence is universal: Just as life itself is transient, so too are the things we accumulate.

Even today, the principle resonates strongly:

Financial risks remind us that investments can collapse overnight.

Natural disasters show how fragile our homes and possessions can be.

Family responsibility highlights the importance of passing down not just wealth, but wisdom.

The Buddha’s advice is timeless: use wealth wisely, share it with others, and cultivate inner richness through compassion and virtue.

“Shared by Five Families” remind that material wealth is never fully secure. True abundance lies not in hoarding possessions, but in generosity, kindness, and the merit that endures beyond this life.
