Self-Management in Buddhist |
The essence of Buddhism lies not only in the transcendence of escaping the world for spiritual practice, but also in guiding people to find liberation and balance in a constantly changing reality. Through a cross-disciplinary perspective, we can analyze how these two great Buddhist wisdom resonate with personal management and further transform into practical tools that everyone can apply in their daily lives, helping people maintain clarity and efficiency in chaotic environments.
The “Four Noble Truths” that I have briefly introduced in my previous articles are the core truths taught by the Buddha after his enlightenment. In summary:
The Truth of Suffering: Recognizing that the world is filled with suffering and imperfection (such as birth, aging, sickness, death, unfulfilled desires, separation from loved ones, and being forced to associate with those one dislikes).
The Truth of the Origin of Suffering: Identifying the root causes of suffering—namely, human attachments and desires such as greed, hatred, and delusion.
The Truth of the Cessation of Suffering: Recognizing that suffering can be extinguished and believing in a state of complete liberation and peace (Nirvana).
The Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering: The specific methods and path for achieving the cessation of suffering, namely the “Eightfold Path” (see previous section).
On the other hand, “The mind of renunciation” by Buddhists means understanding that the place of rebirth in "Samsara" (that is "The Wheel of Reincarnation", the six major directions of rebirth after death that are assigned based on unfinished karmic results from past lives) is also full of suffering from illusion and impermanence. Only by attaining a state of transcendence (not yet reaching Buddhahood) in this life can one be freed from the painful cycle of rebirth.
Applying the “Four Noble Truths” to personal management transforms them into a perfect “crisis management and problem-solving model” characterized by highly efficient, systematic thinking and mindset.
The Truth of Suffering (Identifying the Problem): Face reality; acknowledge and define the current predicament (debt, fraud, declining performance, low morale, etc.).
The Truth of the Origin of Suffering (Cause Analysis): Rationally identify the root causes of the predicament and their potential consequences, rather than focusing solely on superficial symptoms.
The Truth of the Cessation of Suffering (Setting a Direction): Set clear, achievable goals and a direction for improvement.
The Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering (Implementing a Plan): Develop a concrete implementation plan, establish reasonable and lawful processes and resource allocation, and ensure thorough execution.
“The mind of renunciation” corresponds to “objective, rational leadership and the ability to exercise self-control.” An individual who possesses this mindset is no longer bound by personal “self-attachment” (that is, the cycle of troubles relying on obsession with momentary successes, failures, gains, and losses). This naturally allows them to maintain an “emotional distance” from the chaos at hand and make rational decisions from a higher, big-picture perspective without being influenced by emotions. When faced with failure or drastic environmental changes, they can, by the “crisis management and problem-solving model of the Four Noble Truths” pivot quickly and avoid plunging the company or themselves into crisis by clinging to “sunk costs” from past investments.
The inner turmoil, anxiety, and conflicts that are experienced in daily life often stem from overly defending that illusory “self”: my reputation, my interests, and my sense of being right. When we see through the fact that “self-attachment” is merely a product of impermanence and change, and actively distance ourselves from it, we can put into practice the liberating wisdom of the “Four Noble Truths.” Letting go of “self-attachment” does not mean losing autonomy; rather, it means no longer being imprisoned by attachment, and finally "renunciated" from troubles. Only by ceasing to feel the urgent need to prove oneself can one cultivate a truly broad, holistic perspective on self-management and attain genuine inner peace and freedom in life.
