I. Core Definition

Narrative Lock (provisional English name)

Narrative Lock refers to a stable cognitive-affective-behavioral state in which prolonged, repeated, and emotionally intense exposure to specific narratives (including fictional narratives and real-life narrative gaslighting) creates low-effort, automatic associations between certain cues and entire emotional-behavioral scripts. When matching key cues appear in reality, the pre-installed script is activated directly, bypassing or heavily suppressing deliberate rational evaluation, while contradictory information is systematically down-weighted or reinterpreted.

It is not mere persuasion or temporary influence. It is the result of a narrative having achieved dominant status simultaneously across cognitive, emotional, motivational, and identity levels, producing a durable state of automaticity.

II. Formation and Progressive Stages (Detailed Definitions)

1. Narrative Gaslighting

Narrative Gaslighting is the long-term, repeated, and emotionally charged imposition of specific narratives that systematically distort an individual’s perception of relationships, self-worth, responsibility, and reality. Unlike single instances of deception, it continuously implants a particular interpretive framework, causing the person to progressively doubt their own judgment and adopt the version of reality supplied by the controlling party.

At this stage, full automatization has not yet occurred, but self-doubt, memory uncertainty, and a growing tendency to rely on the imposed explanations are already present. This stage constitutes the preparatory ground for Narrative Lock.

2. Narrative Associative Lock

Through repeated co-occurrence of specific cues (tone of voice, gestures, symbolic phrases, relational rhythms, etc.) with intense emotional outcomes (feeling loved, chosen, redeemed, or compensated after suffering), the brain forms stable associative pathways. Thereafter, the mere appearance of key cues is sufficient to trigger the entire emotional and behavioral script automatically.

The defining feature of this stage is low-effort activation. Subjectively, the person often experiences the reaction as “natural,” “instinctive,” or “just a feeling,” while in reality an already-formed associative pathway is running, with rational evaluation largely bypassed.

3. Narrative Associative Consolidation

With repeated activation and reinforcement, the neural pathways stabilize and the activation threshold continues to decrease. Script activation now requires almost no conscious effort and becomes even more likely under conditions of fatigue, stress, or limited attentional resources.

At this point, the narrative has shifted from “one possible interpretation” to the default automatic response route. Initiating rational scrutiny now requires extra cognitive resources to inhibit the already-running script.

4. Narrative Prior Lock-in

The script rises to the status of a high-precision prior. In real social and intimate relationships, it begins to dominate how the individual predicts others’ behavior, interprets the meaning of events, and selects their own actions.

Information consistent with the script is preferentially accepted; inconsistent information is assigned lower precision, ignored, or reinterpreted. The person increasingly organizes their understanding of the world through this narrative. Active inference also begins to operate in the service of maintaining the prior.

5. Cognitive Fog Closed-Loop Cage

As Narrative Prior Lock-in deepens, cognitive resources become heavily occupied by the script. Reality-testing capacity declines significantly: the person finds it difficult to clearly compare costs and benefits, maintain stable personal boundaries, or absorb information that contradicts the script.

A self-reinforcing closed loop forms — the script guides behavior, and the outcomes of that behavior are then interpreted by the same script as confirmation, further strengthening it. The individual becomes trapped in a cognitive maze that offers only one permitted set of explanations.

6. Fogbound Loop (provisional English name)(also referred to as Brain-Fog Samsara Hell)

This is the terminal stage of Narrative Lock. The individual is fully trapped in a repeatedly recurring narrative and relational dead-end, cycling through similar harmful dynamics while remaining largely unable to exit by willpower alone. Each attempt to leave or question the script triggers intense identity disruption, collapse of meaning, or emotional crisis, eventually driving the person back into the familiar script pathway.

For the person concerned, it is a consciously experienced yet seemingly inescapable cycle. For those capable of recognizing the state, it represents an ideal host condition for low-effort, long-term control.

III. Role Definitions

Narrative Thrall (or Narrative Bondservant; corresponding to 敘事困奴)

A person who has entered a deep state of Narrative Lock, particularly the Cognitive Fog Closed-Loop Cage or Fogbound Loop stages. Their perception, emotional responses, and relational behavior are heavily governed by automated scripts, leading them to make intense, low-scrutiny investments in response to specific cues.

Narrative Parasite (provisional English name)

A person who is able to recognize that another individual has already formed a Narrative Lock, and who then precisely exploits that state to exercise control and extraction at extremely low energy cost. The Narrative Parasite does not need to build domination from scratch; it is sufficient to trigger the already-locked script, after which the Narrative Thrall actively cooperates, self-persuades, and remains in the harmful dynamic.

The operational logic resembles that of behavior-manipulating parasites such as Sacculina (the crab-castrating barnacle): the parasite attaches to an already suitable host and rewrites the host’s motivational priorities so that the host itself performs most of the maintenance work.

IV. Core Mechanism of Narrative Parasitism

Narrative Parasitism achieves high efficiency because it does not primarily rely on external force. Instead it:

  • Identifies an existing Narrative Lock;

  • Precisely delivers the key cues that activate the script;

  • Borrows the target’s own active inference so that the target performs rationalization, continued investment, and loop maintenance;

  • Uses intermittent reinforcement and the down-weighting of contradictory information to keep consolidating the lock.

As a result, the cost of control can be far lower than that of traditional suppression or material binding.

V. Distinction Between “Narrative Control” and “Narrative Lock”

Narrative Control is a relatively broad and already existing descriptive term, commonly used in communication studies, political science, and media research. It primarily refers to the process by which external actors (states, media, organizations, opinion leaders, etc.) shape public or group cognition, emotion, and behavior by dominating the prevailing narratives. The emphasis is on “who holds narrative power” and “how public discourse is shaped.”

Narrative Lock, by contrast, is the original core of the present framework. It focuses not on who is speaking externally, but on how narratives become internally installed as high-precision, automated cognitive-affective scripts, producing low-effort automatic responses to specific cues and systematic shielding of contradictory information. Narrative Lock emphasizes the post-internalization state of automatization and its potential for parasitic exploitation.

In short:

  • Narrative Control emphasizes external discursive power and influence operations.

  • Narrative Lock emphasizes internal cognitive installation, automatization, and the resulting low-energy controllable state.

While “narrative control” is widely used as a descriptive phrase, a systematic original framework that models how narratives progressively become high-precision priors, form a stable psychological structure open to low-cost parasitic utilization, and proceeds through clearly defined stages, has not previously been articulated in this form.

VI. Conceptual Positioning

This conceptual system seeks to reveal a covert yet highly efficient logic of control: the most stable forms of domination often do not depend on continuous violence or surveillance, but on first allowing specific narratives to achieve automated dominance inside the other person, and then precisely triggering those narratives. Control can thereby appear voluntary, and even feel like profound emotion or meaning.

These concepts are original to Jules Vela and form part of the Dark Disease series. All English names are provisional and subject to later refinement.

  • 識別已存在的敘事鎖定;

  • 精準投放能激活腳本的關鍵線索;

  • 借用對方的主動推理,使其自行完成合理化、付出與閉環維護;
