書評•評書｜尋找聖地的「非熔爐」：應許之地究竟應許了什麼？【二】

爵士時代的美國

上篇鋪陳了那麼多Herzl和Israel Zangwill，其實不僅歐洲針對猶太人的局勢並沒有半點的好轉，反而一直急轉直下，找尋應許之地的使命從未停止，他們嘗試過墨西哥、澳大利亞，甚至連南北極都想過了，一直沒有個準譜。同時，家族故事逐漸展開，有一支隨著1920年左右的猶太大移民進入了美國德克薩斯州的Galvenston。有意思的是，這一船船的來自歐洲的猶太人到了富庶的美國居然也有了似乎跟今天21世紀差不多的感受👇

美國與歐洲並不相容

家史慢慢展開後，一個小案引起我的注意——

Dorothy Day講到Mike的母親——一位移民到美國的極傳統的猶太教徒，她會戴著傳統的假髮，用充滿悲傷的眼神看著Dorothy，因為這位母親的幾個兒子都跟非猶太教女孩談戀愛，這對於她很難接受，她甚至在他們吃飯後會故意打破碗盤，這樣，他們用過的碗盤就不能再用了，因為不符合猶太潔食的規矩。197

移民美國的猶太人似乎永遠都無法忘記自己歐洲的家鄉，究竟歐洲具有怎樣的魔力呢？這魔力是家鄉的還是歐洲的呢？

Where you were raised really has its hands on you. You are what you're brought up, no matter where you go. 239

反猶太與支持猶太人大遊行

這是一張在倫敦爆發的支持猶太人的大遊行照片，照片中的人群都在聲討希特勒的反猶太政策，而很多上街參與遊行的人並不是猶太人，他們站出來不過是選擇了站在正義的一邊，並且要幫助、支持自己的鄰居友人。其中一個非猶太人說，哈，這下希特勒的耳朵可要很紅一陣了！【原來他們也有這個說法😂】

其實我對於能夠站出來幫助猶太人的非猶太人一直都非常敬佩，而當時的歐洲雖然處於反猶太的漩渦當中，這樣的人和事件卻一直都存在，非常值得敬仰。

關於巴勒斯坦的爭議

猶太人最喜歡爭論了，就連選擇他們自己民族的應許之地都爭論不斷。這確實是他們值得欣賞的一個方面。

上面👆的文字紀錄就反映出了這樣的爭論。雖然已經確定英國管轄內的巴勒斯坦為應許之地，但是對於這一選擇的討論從未結束，事實證明，這一選擇的爭議和後果也從來沒有停止。《每日郵報》紀錄道，

In 1939 the British Government decided to allow 75,000 more Jews into Palestine and then to stop immigration. 328

結果英國兩邊不是人，Halifax Evening Courier報導說👇

Britain was attacked by the Jews for not allowing sufficient to enter and condemned by the Arabs for allowing too many.

在J.L. Garvin口中，這是一個「vile moral dilemma」。328

Quintin Hogg更是一針見血

What right have we to be in Palestine at all? Are we there to protect our interest? But what interest are we protecting by making ourselves hated by Arab and Jew alike？

Why should we stay on for the sake of keeping peace between two communities who do not want it kept? 329

之後的巴以衝突接踵而至，百年來從未停止。

但是，很多人對巴以衝突逐漸認識是因為哈瑪斯對於以色列的襲擊，其實，作者Rachel讓我們知道了在各個媒體中，這一衝突自1948年以色列建國後早已存在。下面是1949年的諷刺漫畫👇

回想之前他們在選擇烏干達作為應許之地的時候對於烏干達土地的傲慢與偏見，如今產生這樣的後果無可厚非。然而，可惜的是，衝突之中裹挾的從來都是無數並不支持這些的無辜的普通人，他們世世代代卻要背負沈重的代價。

最後想說的是，當時很多剛剛移民以色列的歐洲猶太人依舊無法忘懷他們所謂的歐洲故鄉，那個怎麼也不想放過他們的「故鄉」👇

My friend's mother had come from Germany. She never learnt Hebrew at all - she only spoke German.

Some German Jews resented having to leave Germany.

They knew that Hitler hated what he called the garlic-smelling Jews from Eastern Europe, but they were not like that. They felt they were real Germans. They had their own shops and their own newspaper, and they just didn’t want to be there. 343

實際上，流離失所的猶太人倒是應了書中的這句話，

Those early Zionists all had their own dreams of what this perfect country was going to be, and obviously they were just dreams. 343
